Hi

I am spreading word about my new book about my life working on a cruise ship. Permanent Passenger: My Life on a Cruise Ship chronicles my wacky job search to get my dream job as Assistant Cruise Director and takes you behind the scenes on a cruise ship. Go to www.permanentpassenger.com to see more about the book.

Truly a very funny insightful book that will make you laugh – cry – and throw up just a bit.

Cheers

in exchange for some help. I have a small, fun B&B in Puerto Rico and I am looking for someone to cook breakfast, make beds and do laundry for about a month starting Jan. 30. My business partner needs to return to California to take care of a sick relative and I need to keep the business open. If you are a couple or individual who would lke some warm weather, own room, swimming pool, great atmosphere with ocean view of the Caribbean in a small fishing village -- please respond. Oh, here is a small black lab named "Marley" (yes, after Bob) who also lives here. Please email so we can talk more if you are interested.

Gracias, Boricua

ps. take a look - www.casalibrepr.com - serious folk only please!

Vacation Homes for rent in St. Thomas?

Hello all,

I went to Costa Rica with some friends last year and we all stayed in a large vacation home instead of a resort or hotel....Where can I find a site that offers that in St.Thomas? I have some friends that may come with me late this year, so I'd like for us to all stay in a home close to the beach if possible as opposed to the hotel.

Also, hello to all Clendinens (mi familia) in the USVI. See you all around October!

any insight on inexpensive/easy travel from antigua to dominica?

I will be visiting during carnival this year and am very excited about that
I have also always wanted to see some (all) of dominica and thought i would take advantage of the opportunity

we used to take a ferry from st. thomas to virgin gorda for day trips to the bathes
are there any such things of this nature offered from antigua to dominica

also; does anyone know any hidden gems such as hot springs, waterfalls, etc...that would be a perfect setting for our wedding ceremony? I really do not wish to have it done in a average place when there maybe a perfect setting just around the bend so to speak
I found the longer I lived on st. thomas the more "hidden", special places I found out about and we will only be ther for one week or so

cheers
FG

Hello! I just found this tribe, glad to be here. I moved to PR when I was 5 years old and moved away in my sophomore year of college. Born to an Irish monther and German father, I am not sure what I would call myself, lol. I know that I keep PuertoRico in my heart and part of my heritage.
I keep in touch with most of my friends on the rock, but I would love to chat with more from PR or who love PR, or even, who have not been, and want to know more about it......
can't wait!
i will be there for awhile! wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to any special items i may want to consider packing form home!
i am certainly not about creature comforts but sometimes the necessities of life are hard to track down in other countries.
wondering if there are items that i may not bother to pack that may turn out to be really expensive there......
shoes, bathing suits, underwear?
any suggestions anyone?

I don't understand how giving someone 10.00, 40.00, 200.00 $$ is going to help them find thier loved ones. they can't go there, they can't pay someone to look for them. Long distance calls are cheep these days, phones are down anyway, free web sites carry all available info WHAT'S THE $ FOR ??BEWARE BEFOR SENDING $$ TO ANYONE

I'm wondering if there is anyone here who lives on GC who can give me some ideas of where to send a CV. Thanks, cheers ./bc bettyx1138@gmail.com

Dominica & Violence

Hi There,

After two years in Antigua I am moving away soon to SF for a while. However I am seriously thinking these days of buying a little piece of land in Dominica (some good deals out there...) and at some point doing something out there living in Dominica at least part of the year.

I spent all in all two weeks out there over the last two years and my experiences were very positive -- the people we nice, the rainforest amazing, the rivers... waterfalls... just perfect... and it had for me that special place of somewhere you know you may be able to call home one day. However lately when talking to people about Dominica they were mentioning to me a lot of prejudice against white men and violence -- Things I did not get to experience at all. I did not even get a hint of really. The only bad vibes for me personally in Dominica were around the Carib territory...

I am now researching a bit online about the economic and social history of Dominica and I see some radical groups in the 70's but since then it looks pretty stable. Could it be that the people I talked to may have been influenced by the history? Am I missing something and Dominica is this dangerous place that somehow welcomed me those two weeks I spent there?

I can think of a thousan think of one reason not to move to the caribbean. I can think of one reason TO move to the caribbean that overrides the 1000 reasons not to: because it's what you really want to do.

In May I'll be certified as a scuba instructor, I'm an assistant instructor now. I would realy like to relocate my pooch and myself to the islands. I'm embarking on a five year plan.

I'm looking for a LAID BACK lifestyle, a hut near the beach, perhaps open a small low key bar and build a few simple low cost guest rooms and teach diving. I've only visited Roatan, and Bonaire.

I have enough ff miles for 7 rt's so I can go check places out. Any suggestions? I'm looking for a place where there will be few beureaucratic hoops to jump through to accomplish my goals.

Hello all,

I just joined this tribe - going to Grenada on March 14th 2006 to spend two weeks on the island and would appreciate any ideas or comments on what to see, where to go and what not to miss (or the opposite for that matter!). If any locals would like to meet for a beer and fill me in on what's going on in Grenada, gimme a shout, too!

Regards,

DVD TO RAISE FUNDS FOR GRENADA HURRICANE RELIEF

Hi

I have just released a new documentary film about Grenada. Here is more info

GRENADA: THE MAROON SPIRIT, a new documentary film by Pumpkinhead Production Company to donate portion of sales to Grenada Maroon Fund

What happens when a small Caribbean island is hit by a massive hurricane? How does a country cope when 90% of their homes are destroyed or damaged? What happens when your agricultural sector is wrecked and your major export crop will take years to recover? What are the hopes of the people for the future under such conditions? These are some of the questions that GRENADA: THE MAROON SPIRIT hopes to answer for people. This new production by the Pumpkinhead Production Company was filmed on the island of Grenada in the Eastern Caribbean in November of 2004, two months after Hurricane Ivan devastated the island nation on September 7.

Traveling throughout Grenada and its sister island of Carriacou, GRENADA: THE MAROON SPIRIT interviews people from all walks of life, hearing about their experiences with the deadly hurricane and their efforts to rebuild their lives. They tell of the deadly winds, the flying debris and the resulting destruction. Their stories of working together with their neighbours, as a community to quickly get back on their feet are inspiring and educational. They credit Hurricane Ivan with rekindling the “Maroon Spirit” amongst the population. The actual live footage of Hurricane Ivan shows the deadly force that these brave people had to face.

The film places Hurricane Ivan within a historical context by interviewing two of Grenada’s foremost historians, author and historian George Brizan and Beverly Steele, author and Head Tutor at T.A. Marryshow House, Grenada campus of the University of the West Indies about Grenada’s past. This is a past that includes mass suicides, civil wars, dictatorships, revolutions, and invasions. Brenda Hood, Minister of Tourism, tells of the hurricane’s affect on the government and its efforts to rebuild their country.

GRENADA: THE MAROON SPIRIT is a fifty-minute documentary film. It is the first feature length film by the Pumpkinhead Production Company, an independent film production house located in New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada. The DVD is being sold online at www.grenadamaroonspirit.com or by mailing Pumpkinhead Production Company, P.O. Box 283, 720 6th Street, New Westminster, BC V3L 3C5. Pumpkinhead is committed to donating a portion of every sale to the Maroon Spirit Fund to aid in Grenada’s recovery.

I ordered some parts for my rangerover last week to spiff it up so I can sell it before I leave.
The Postal service here is terribly unreliable. I've had 5 or 6 packages sent to me in the last 5 months, 2 of which have gotten to me. Given this track record it isn't really sensible to ship time sensitive packages via regular post, or anything I actually want to receive for that matter. So I had my parts supplier ship DHL, which is cheaper than fedex.

I had a look at my credit card statement, and I had a charge for over double what I had ordered. I called up the supplier and asked them to break down the prices for me.

Distributor leads: 16 pounds
Servo Repair kit: 50 pounds
Window handle: 16 pounds
water pump: 40 pounds
Sub Total: 122 pounds
shipping: 178 pounds
Total: 300 pounds

I guess it's really my bad, for not getting the shipping costs before hand, but they really couldn't tell me until they shipped.
No the real problem comes when you have to pay duty. Duty is 100% on shipping, variable percentage on content. In the case of auto parts it's %100%
So I've just paid %500 markup on retail. In USD it breaks down like this

Total Parts cost: 222.975
Total Shipping cost: 325.324
Total Duty: 548.299
Total: 1096.598

1100 US dollars for 220 dollars worth of parts. HOLY FUCKING SHIT. Thats more than most grenadians make in month!1

IM GLEEFULLY LOOKING FORWARD TO STRIP MALLS, MCDONALDS, TARGET, WALMART, TRAFFIC, SMOG, BURGER KING,

Hows travel for a girl going solo?

So I am going to T&T this summer, most likely by myself. Is this a bad idea? I have travelled extensivly within large and small groups of students, but never solo in a foreign country. I would be staying at a hostel and bumming around between the islands. Any info would be great. Thanks!

Someone posted me this blurb.

The Grenadian Prime Minister, Keith Mitchell has imprisoned 4 people and sued several others claiming "Libel", over the possibility of them redistributing a news article exposing a scandal to the tune of half a million dollars written by David Marchant of OffShoreAlert/
Luckily, The Jamaica Observer has disregarded legal threats and http://www.jamaicaobserver.com/news/html/20040605T000000-0500_60778_OBS_GRENADA_S_PM_FILES_LAWSUITS_AGAINST_CABLE___WIRELESS.asp, published an article outlining the scandal as well as the oppression of free speech..
PM Mitchell has sued http://www.candw.gd into shutting down the Grenadian community forums, but someone outside of Grenada has setup a replacement at http://grenada.undef.net
